Cadaques — Closed Details

Cadaqués, the exquisitely beautiful Spanish hometown of Salvador Dali, is now also a tapas restaurant in Williamsburg—and it's also quite gorgeous. Located in a space formerly occupied by two ground-floor apartments near Iona on Grand Street, this capacious, warmly-lit restaurant is the labor of love of Mathieu Reboul, who named it after the town where his parents were married.

Gilles Ray, owner of Flee Market Cafe was a source of mentorship and inspiration for Mathieu durring the 19 months he was to spend designing Cadaqués. The result is a restaurant that feels like it's been open for decades. The ceiling is galvanized metal that Mathieu rusted himself in the basement, part of the bar is assembled from 150-year-old wood from an old factory, and some of the walls are lined with old potato sacks, which are also seen in the lampshades hanging from the ceiling lights. But perhaps the best design element is the huge front windows that open out into the street, or maybe the space by the door where a jazz band regularly plays.

The menu offers a wide-ranging selection of "modern Catalan" tapas from chef Guillaume Thivet, who has worked in both David Bouley and Craig Shelton's kitchens. Options include Baby spare ribs with Spanish BBQ Sauce ($12), Stuffed Calamari with Chorizo Paella ($11), Catalan Fideua Negra with Croutons and Eggplant ($6), and cheese plates featuring all Spanish cheeses. The wine list is also almost entirely Spanish, with a few French exceptions, and ranges in price from $5 to $9 a glass. Cocktails and seven beers on tap are also served at the full bar.
