Arts & Attractions Isamu Noguchi Garden Museum

The Isamu Noguchi Garden Museum celebrates the life and work of Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988). Noguchi was born in 1904, and continued making sculpture until his death in 1988. His career of more than sixty years intersected some of the crucial persons and places of our time.

Noguchi's desire to share his work with a broad public audience led to the opening of the Isamu Noguchi Garden Museum in 1985. The permanent home of The Isamu Noguchi Garden Museum displays a comprehensive collection of artwork by Noguchi in a tranquil setting created by the artist. On exhibition are more than 240 works, including stone, metal, wood and clay sculptures, models for public projects and gardens, dance sets, and Noguchi's Akari light sculptures. Housed in thirteen galleries within a converted factory building, and encircling a garden containing major granite and basalt sculptures, the museum presents one of the most dramatic installations of art in New York City.

Astoria Description

Isamu Noguchi Garden Museum is located in the Astoria neighborhood of Manhattan. Astoria is the western-most neighborhood in Queens, running from the East River west to Northern Boulevard and 49th Street, and from Ditmars Boulevard south to Queens Plaza. It is just north of Long Island City, of which Astoria once was and is sometimes still considered to be a part, and is bounded on the north by Steinway and by Woodside on the east.

Nestled in one of the most suburban boroughs, Astoria peeks across the East River at Manhattan from its squat houses and commercial buildings. Largely residential, the neighborhood has gone through the usual waves of immigrants over the course of the centuries; first, the Germans, then the Italians and Jews, a massive and significant influx of Greeks, and most recently, Middle Eastern, African, and Eastern Europeans have made Astoria their new home. For a neighborhood that takes its name from John Jacob Astor—once the richest man in America—it remains remarkably middle-class, with a strong sense of community and ethnic heritage, making it a very tight-knit neighborhood.

There are, of course, many great ethnic restaurants of all stripes in Astoria, from favorites like Uncle George's Greek Tavern, Il Bambino, and the Bohemian Beer Hall & Garden to Malagueta, Mojave, and The Queens Kickshaw. For drinking, there's the Quays Pub, cocktails at Sweet Afton, and The Barn. For attractions, there's the wonder Noguchi Garden Museum, showcasing the amazing work of the famed sculptor, even more artistic action at Socrates Sculpture Park, and the Museum Of The Moving Image.

Isamu Noguchi Interior Design

Isamu Noguchi sought to make sculpture useful in everyday life, and his furniture and interior designs are an important part of this project. Noguchi most actively worked in this field during the 1940s, creating furniture and interiors that displayed the biomorphic imagery of his contemporary sculpt... [ + ]ure. After the Second World War Noguchi traveled to Japan, where in 1951 he created the first paper and bamboo Akari lamps. Noguchi continued to design new Akari models for the rest of his career. The Museum has created a special gallery devoted to Noguchi's celebrated work in interior design and is well worth a visit.
