Holy Trinity Lutheran Church Details

With its signature steeple, rose window and red doors, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church has been a visible part of the Upper West Side community for over a century. The present building was completed in 1904.

Holy Trinity is located near Lincoln Center, across from Central Park. Holy Trinity worships in the evangelical catholic tradition of the Lutheran Mass, with a strong emphasis on music and outreach. They are a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). The congregation, which embraces a diversity of people and life-styles, finds its unity in the fellowship of worship and service. Holy Trinity is recognized by Lutherans Concerned as a Reconciling in Christ congregation. The church's full ministry and programs are available to all its members.

The weekly celebration of Word and Sacrament occurs Sunday mornings and on all principal festivals. Worship is characterized by the proclamation of the Gospel, celebration of the Holy Eucharist, and by an intense musical involvement and expression of choir and congregation. As a member of the ELCA, all baptized Christians are invited to share in the Holy Eucharist.

Holy Trinity is most widely known for the Bach Vespers series, begun in 1968, the first instance in America where the cantatas of Bach could be heard regularly on their appointed day (as composed by Bach) in the context of worship. Cantatas, as well as other appropriate music, are performed by the professional Bach Choir and Bach Players from Reformation Sunday through Easter. Our Bach Choir has recorded hymns and liturgical music for Augsburg Fortress Publishing House.
